Originally from the suburbs of Chicago and New York, Dr. Mates trained in Alabama for his medical school and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed his fellowship in Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle at the Andrews Institute for Sports Medicine. His mentors included team physicians at the college and professional level. Under their guidance he learned stat of the art techniques and obtained specialized training in all Foot and Ankle disorders of the athlete, weekend warrior and non-athlete from the adolescent to the geriatric population. Dr. Mates has unique skills in managing not only Foot and Ankle disorders but athletic performance and rehabilitation. He employs modern tools including arthroscopic assisted stem cell technology and subchondroplasty for cartilage restoration. For irreparable end stage arthritis he offers new technology in performing total ankle replacement. In addition to fracture care, flat foot and high arch reconstruction, Dr. Mates cares for forefoot disorders including plantar plate tears, bunions and hammer toes.

As a medical doctor and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Mates uses evidence based medicine as the standard of care in his practice to provide patients with sound, tested treatment protocols. He strives to provide quality, value-based, patient-focused care through educating and guiding his patients. He understands the patient's time is valuable and will make every effort to maximize the patient's comfort and convenience throughout the visit.
